Class descriptions:

Costume Contest Halter Class: Dress up in a costume with your horse and come be judged by our secret panel of parents.  This halter class is ALL about the costume, but provides a great opportunity to come practice in the ring before fair! Costumes can be as basic or wild as you and your horse can tolerate.  Be sure to practice at home. Lycra sheets, or blankets or washable paint are good options.  Get creative with what you have at home and show us what you’ve got!

Jumping: Speed jumping course using cross rails, a timed event with penalty for poles knocked down.

Egg and Spoon Rail Class: Riders will ride the rail in the discipline of their choice while holding an egg on a spoon.  Starting out at a walk, moving to trot and then canter, riders are out once they’ve lost their egg.  Last rider with the egg on the spoon wins! Class open to riders who can walk/trot/canter in group setting.

Partner Baton Race: A timed event with partner, rider will ride down and around barrel holding a baton (1/2 pool noodle) and then pass the noodle off to partner who will do the same.  Quickest pair wins.  Partner classes are not broken down by age, any aged pair (exiting grades 4-12) can enter.

Catalogue Look Up: A timed event, rider will ride down arena, dismount, find a specific page of a catalogue, mount and return to ring steward.

Softball Toss: Pairs will toss a ball back and forth stepping farther and farther apart as directed by ring steward.  Furthest toss pair wins.  Partner classes are not broken down by age, any aged pair (exiting grades 4-12) can enter.

Jousting Showdown: A ring hanging from a pole will be your target.  Using your jousting stick, snag the ring. We’ll start at a walk and gradually increase to a canter as we weed down the competition.

Clothing Race: A timed event, get down to the other end of the arena, put on a oversized outfit and return back home. Quickest Time wins

Trail Class: Slightly different than fair, but a good practice of all the obstacles.  Riders will be timed and receive a 10 second penalty for any refusal with a max refusal of 3 for each obstacle.  We’ll have mailbox, bridge, trotting poles and L shape walk through.

Boot Race: Last year we held this class for just the Minis and everyone else wanted to join in. This year it is open to all riders – they will kick off their boots in a pile to be tossed around arena by our adult helpers.  Riders will line up and when the race begins, they will race to find their own boots, get them back on, and back to the finish line. (No horses are used in this race)

Water Cup Equitation: How steady are your hands? Each rider will be given a plastic cup filled with water.  We’ll start out at a walk and gradually increase in speed as we work through an equitation class.  Class open to riders who can walk/trot/canter in group setting.

Hungry Hungry Hippo Contest:  One barrel in the middle will house 4 balls of each color, it will be your job to retrieve one ball at a time and place it in your assigned color hoola hoop  in one corner of the arena.  First one to get all 4 of their balls in their hoop (or the one with the most balls in the hoop at the end) wins! Winner of each flight will go again to crown the winner of this contest.

Horsemanship/Equitation Breadcrumbs: A pattern will be given and you’ll take 3 beanbags along for the ride.  You’ll complete the pattern and drop off a beanbag in each of the 3 marked spaces along your path. Point penalties for incorrect gait on path and missed breadcrumb drop locations. A good way to practice a pattern and have some fun at the same time!

Barrels, Flags, Poles, Key Hole, Speed and Action are all standard contesting events.
